Wind Cave National Park — Visitor Info

← Back to National Parks

Wind Cave National Park protects one of the world's longest and most complex cave systems, along with the mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine above it in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Above ground you'll find bison, elk, and prairie dogs; below ground, a maze of passages famous for their boxwork formations.

Entrance Fees & Cave Tours

There is no entrance fee to drive through the park, hike its trails, or visit the visitor center. Cave tours — including the Garden of Eden, Natural Entrance, Fairgrounds, Candlelight, Wild Cave, and Accessibility tours — are ticketed separately and are not covered by Federal Interagency Passes. Only credit/debit or digital payment is accepted for tours, camping, and passes. About half of all tour tickets are sold in advance on Recreation.gov (up to 2 days ahead); the rest go on sale first-come, first-served at the visitor center the day of the tour, and often sell out one to two hours before the tour time.

Every Kid Outdoors — Free 4th Grade Pass

Wind Cave doesn't charge a general entrance fee, so the Every Kid Outdoors pass mainly matters at other parks — but note that even Interagency and 4th Grade passes do not cover cave tour tickets here. Learn more at everykidoutdoors.gov.

Permits & Reservations

General day use — driving, hiking, wildlife viewing — doesn't require a permit. Special events and professional photography require a special use permit.

Campgrounds & RV Options

Elk Mountain Campground
Where the prairie meets the forest. $24/site/night regularly, dropping to $12/night when the water is turned off (generally October through May); Senior and Access Pass holders pay half price.

Good to Know

  • Wind Cave is famous for boxwork — a rare honeycomb-like calcite formation found in greater abundance here than almost anywhere else on Earth.
  • Above-ground wildlife is a big draw too — bison, elk, and prairie dog towns are commonly seen along the park's roads.
  • Book cave tours ahead in peak season — same-day tickets sell out fast March through October.
  • Cave temperatures stay cool year-round — bring a light jacket even in summer.
