Voyageurs National Park — Visitor Information

← Back to National Parks

Voyageurs is nearly 40% water, and most of the park is only reachable by boat. There's no entrance fee, but camping, houseboating, and guided tours all require their own permits or reservations. Here's what to know before you plan a trip.

Fees

Voyageurs has no entrance fee — it's free to enter and explore. Fees only apply to specific activities:

  • Camping: reservation fee + nightly amenity fee per site
  • Houseboat permits: required for any overnight stay, May 1 – October 31
  • Ranger-led boat tours: ticketed, fee-based

Interagency Senior and Access passes give a 50% discount on boat tours only — they don't apply to camping or houseboat fees.

Every Kid Outdoors — Free 4th Grade Pass

Since Voyageurs has no entrance fee, this pass doesn't apply here directly — but it's worth grabbing at everykidoutdoors.gov for other fee parks on the same trip.

Permits & Reservations

Houseboats

Any houseboat, sailboat, or cabin cruiser with sleeping/cooking facilities needs a permit for overnight stays between May 1 and October 31.

Ranger-Led Boat Tours

Campgrounds & RV Options

Voyageurs has no traditional drive-up campgrounds or RV sites — nearly all camping is boat-access only, and every site requires a reservation. There's no walk-up or self-registration camping anywhere in the park.

159 boat-access campsites park-wide
143 frontcountry sites (reachable by boat, most a short paddle or motor from a visitor center or access point), 14 backcountry sites, and 2 primitive sites. No vehicle or RV camping is possible — there are no roads to most campsites.

2026 season reservations opened November 15, 2025 — popular dates and sites can book up months ahead. See current fees and site details before booking.

Good to Know

  • No park shuttle: your own boat (or a rental/tour) is how you get around — this isn't a drive-through park.
  • Winter ice road: in season, a plowed ice road can open across Rainy Lake, letting cars reach areas otherwise boat-only — conditions change fast, always confirm current status before driving on ice.
  • Cell service: limited to none across most of the park's interior.
